Send me your pictures!
Alabama is a place of natural beauty and sometimes extravagant culture. Growing up in Birmingham and currently living in Tuscaloosa, I think it’s hard for me to realize the diversity found throughout the state. I’ve never even taken a real trip to Montgomery. I’ve been there, sure, but it was always for business reasons. I’ve never been to the Montgomery Brewing Company or the State House. I’ve never seen Noccalula Falls. I’ve never walked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge or partied at the Mobile Mardis Gras. It wasn’t until last summer that I stood outside in 90+ degree weather in the Black Belt looking at farmland in all directions.
Even though I hope to eventually see these things in person, I have a more immediate plan. The Vulcan photograph from Curtis Palmer got me thinking. I know for a fact that I have readers all across the state, and I want to ask you to send me pictures. It doesn’t have to be anything too grand. An old cemetary in Hale County or a Covered Bridge in Blount County would be perfect. For your efforts, I would like to post your photograph in my new Around Alabama category which I just created for this purpose. I would of course give due credit to the photographer and provide any particular information you wanted. If a photo is appropriate for such treatment, I may even use it to create another website banner.
Here are some guidelines:
- Send submissions to
dan@betweenthelinks.comdan@dailydixie.com
- Only photos taken by you or someone close to you. I don’t want stock photos.
- It doesn’t have to be taken just for me. Send me those old pictures!
- Try to select subjects that are reminiscent of Alabama or your local area — cotton fields, Vulcan, the Saturn V rocket, the USS Alabama, or an old stone well are all great examples.
- I’m mainly looking for landscape or sites. If there’s people in the photo, it had better be either Bear Bryant or George Wallace.
- Don’t worry about editing the photo with the computer. I can do that.
- Let me know how you want to be credited. Otherwise, I’ll use the name you gave in your email.
- Try not to include a timestamp or datestamp on your photo, but I can always edit it out if it’s there anyway.
- Only photos taken by you or someone close to you. I don’t want stock photos!!!
I really really hopes this gets a good response. I look forward to seeing any submissions!

You must go to Noccalula Falls in the Springtime. My mother’s (she is 85 yrs.old) parents used to go “courting” there and that was prior to 1908, the year they married. It is a lovely place to be and don’t forget to take a picnic. I have some photos somewhere of my visits - will try to find them. Glad you visited the Black Belt where we live. The miles and miles of catfish lakes are a sight to behold. As for the State House, been there, done that but am too disgusted with the mostly self-serving folks in that building to even think about the beauty of the architecture.

Dan, it seems that I can’t even send you an email, much less pictures, at either of the two addresses I have for you. I get notified that they weren’t delivered because they are considered SPAM.
If you want to spend a while sight-seeing in the Montgomery, Lake Martin, Lake Jordan area you can make your headquarters at my home. I don’t charge much.

Bev, I hope you can find them. Don, I just sent you an email in hopes that it will let my servers know that you’re not spam.

LOL, Dan, I received your email in quadruplicate, but I only sent one reply. I’m stingy that way.

Hmmm… I’m particularly interested in catching a few things around the Trussville/Springville/Argo area. William’s Orchard, Homestead Hollow, and the view from The Pennacle come to mind…

I know you want photos taken by us, but if you have a chance to see photos by William Christenberry of old Hale County cemetaries and buildings I would look him up. They are spectacular

You have to go to Noccalula Falls, if for no other reason than the rainbow ice cream. They’d better still have it. I’ll be crushed if they don’t.

Still waiting for pictures…
(and I’ll check out Christenberry, bamalaw)
